HIV Patients at Heightened Risk for Certain Cancers
A weakened immune system and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking put HIV-infected patients at increased risk for cancer, according to a new study. The researchers also said that starting antiretroviral therapy at an earlier stage of HIV infection might reduce cancer risk.
The primary goal of the study, one of the first to compare the risk of cancer in HIV-infected patients, was to determine how much of the increased risk was the result of the disease and how much was due to other risk factors, such as smoking, the researchers said. The study authors compared the rates of 10 types of cancer that occurred among HIV-infected patients and HIV-free patients from Kaiser Permanente in Northern and Southern California between 1996 and 2008.

Europe sets out tough rules on medicines info
Europe will strictly limit the amount of information that drugmakers can supply to the public on prescription-only medicines and retain a ban on advertising under proposed rules set out on Tuesday. The latest proposals from the European Commission amend those made in 2008, following criticism that the original ideas went too far in loosening restrictions governing communications between pharmaceuticals companies and patients.
John Dalli, European commissioner for health and consumer policy, said in a statement the new proposals would “further strengthen the control of authorized medicines.” The new proposals from the Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, would allow information in only certain areas, such as information on the label and on packaging leaflets, information on prices and clinical trials, and instructions for use.

Malaria vaccine shows promise
An experimental malaria vaccine tested on children in Burkina Faso has shown “a high level of efficacy” in protecting against the disease, a study published in the United States said Wednesday. The study was initially planned to study the safety and immune response of the vaccine, known by the name MSP3.
“However, as malaria attacks were documented as part of the safety follow-up, the investigators decided to explore the protective effect of the vaccine,” said report appearing in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine. “Results indicate a high level of efficacy.” In the study, 45 children aged 12-24 months were randomized into three groups receiving doses of either 15 or 30 micrograms of the experimental malaria vaccine, or the control vaccine against Hepatitis B.”Comparing the groups, they found a striking difference,” the study said.

New cancers in the family may merit extra screening
Keeping your doctor up-to-date on cancers in your family could put you on the fast track to screening tests, according to a study that takes a new stab at personalizing preventive medicine. Researchers found that from age 30 to age 50, the number of people who would be candidates for early colon cancer screening based on family history jumped from two to seven percent.
For breast cancer, the number of women qualifying for earlier and more sensitive screening went up from seven to 11 percent over the same period. “Doctors should take a family history every five to 10 years,” said Dr. Sharon Plon from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who worked on the study. “Only taking a good family history the first time you see someone means you will miss important changes.”
